APPLICATION:

  • Often times when we are faced with difficulty, we seek things that are not God.  Can you think of anything you seek, someone you seek counsel from, or things you do when you are faced with trial?  Verse 2 reminds us to look to Jesus, who is the founder and perfecter of our faith. In Him we can find peace and contentment in all circumstances.

  • Explain a time when you were disciplined by your parent.  Looking back, how did this discipline do you well?  As this text tells us, our earthly father (or parent) disciplines us the best way he knows how, but God disciplines us to perfection.  How has God shown you discipline in your life?  Looking back, how has this discipline perfected your faith and brought you closer to Jesus?  

  • Are you familiar with the story of Esau that it mentions in verses 16-17?  If not, read it in Genesis 25:19-34 here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=genesis%2025:19-34&version=ESV.  Have you ever made a foolish decision like Esau did in this text?  If so what was it, and what did you learn from making this mistake?

Therefore...let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, who is the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.  {Verses 1-2}

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son who he receives. {Verse 6}
