1 JOHN

Chapter 3

read chapter

STUDY:

  • What proof do we have that God loves us?

  • How do we purify ourselves?

  • What also do you practice if you make a practice of sinning?

  • What does it say about the person who keeps on sinning?

  • Whoever practices righteousness is what?

  • Who is of the devil?  What does this mean?

  • What abides in the person who is born of God?

  • What did Cain do?

  • What does verse 13 say? Why would this be so?

  • Paraphrase verse 17.

  • God is greater than our.....what?

  • How do we know God abides in us? (last verse)

APPLICATION:

  • Do you call yourself a Christian but practice sin?  By this I don't mean that you sin- because everyone sins.  But one who "makes a practice of sinning" is someone who continually, intentionally, knowingly sin against God and have no intention of stopping yet.  Many of these people say, "I will change... but just not right now."  If this sounds familiar to you, I ask you to reread verses 4-10 again, because in this text it says that if you live this way, that God does not abide in you- which also means you do not belong to God.

  • Are there people in your workplace, school, community that dislike-  maybe even hate you?  How does this relate to the chapter read today?

  • Do you know anyone personally that is need?  Can you sacrifice what you have for someone who needs it?  If you dont' think you can afford to give to someone in need, pray that God would allow you to, so that you are able to show generosity to another in need.

Read my thoughts on this chapter:

"continuing in sin"

HIGHLIGHTED TEXT:

No one who abides in Him (Jesus) keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.  {Verse 6}

Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.  {Verse 13}

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?  {Verse 17}
